5 ways to prevent a DUI this St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is coming up, and that means the parties are about to start. But beneath all the fun and celebration lies a real danger - drunk driving. Even if you avoid an accident, being arrested and convicted of a DUI can lead to devastating fines and jail time. The truth is you do not have to choose one or the other. You can have fun and avoid driving drunk. Here are some tips to stop yourself from driving drunk and causing an accident.

1. Get a designated driver

If you are going to consume alcoholic beverages, the best way to ensure you do not get behind the wheel is by planning ahead. Selecting a trustworthy designated driver is a great way to accomplish this. It is imperative to choose someone who is reliable, carries a valid license, knows your address and has emergency contact information.

2. Arrange alternative transportation

Sometimes you cannot find a designated driver or the chosen driver does not keep the promise of not consuming alcohol. In this situation, your best bet is to take advantage of public transportation. Taking the bus or train is an affordable way to keep yourself and everyone else safe. If public transportation is not available, consider taking a taxi or utilizing a ridesharing app. Just because you might not have a designated driver does not mean you cannot get home safely.

3. Hide your keys

You cannot get behind the wheel if you do not have your keys. If you anticipate that you will be tempted to drive while drunk, give your keys to the party host or a friend you trust. Ensure that this person will keep your keys away from you until you are home safely and sober.

4. Include food and have alternative drinks

Consuming filling foods can slow the absorption and effects of alcohol, in particular salty and starchy foods. You can also have plenty of other nonalcoholic drinks, including water. While these tactics may not guarantee you will stay below the legal BAC limit, they do help.

5. DUI defense

Sometimes it is too late to take preventative measures. If you have found yourself arrested because of drunk driving, it is not too late to get help. You can defend against the DUI charge. Knowing the laws, rights and options for your case can help you come out the other end without prosecution. Receiving guidance and information from a criminal defense lawyer can help you resolve your situation, so be sure to get the representation you need.
